Victoria: A Tale of Spain is a historical period-drama adventure for girls, set in 17th century Spain. 14-year-old Victoria is one of the younger members in the Segovian ducal family. Her home is a rugged castle just a few miles from the king’s summer residence, but Victoria has never seen the king. That changes when her older sister learns from a mysterious mercenary that King Felipe has a grudge against the dukes of Segovia. An invitation to visit the court leads Victoria to discover that the king plans to kill everyone in her family because of a threat to his throne. And her married sister Julia, living abroad, is next. With little time to protect her family, Victoria must trust a prince who offers to help her and overcome two incompetent thugs and a hostile cousin obtruding himself at all the wrong moments. There’s a bit more to being a duchess than she bargained for.

The Birthday Present (with MC) is a pair of short stories about girls who are faced with adventure as the worlds they grew up in are coming to an end. Lucy (The Birthday Present) and Alyce (Millhaven Castle) both belong to tiny subcultures that were created in a violent, dimly understood past. Lucy’s futuristic world is ruled by mutants called GMFs. She is supposed to blend in with a colony of humans, but she is actually a time-traveler with a built-in mission of her own. Alyce lives in a small rural kingdom, reminiscent of fairy tales, ruled by a dynasty that took over the country questionably. Her people, the Sherbans, are still locked in a humdrum argument about that succession, and the king cares about those old politics quite as much as they do. Each girl owns a special item, like a box or a bracelet, that could resolve centuries-old disputes as unexpected friends and surprising events accompany the end of an era and the start of something new.

Bellevere House is a work of literary women’s fiction set in the United States during the 1930s. It is loosely based on Jane Austen’s Mansfield Park and was written for an Austen-themed collection. The central character, Faye Powell, is a Cinderella figure living with her unusually wealthy relatives, the Havertons. Her Haverton cousins don’t share the experiences of most people at this time because of their father’s affluence and though Faye is grateful to her dignified aunt and uncle, she isn’t shy about noticing when they are out of touch. An aging power structure based on old relationships between middle-aged people dominates the lives of Faye’s friends, whose exuberant behavior conceals how scripted their lives really are. But a hasty engagement based on finance, a chic brother and sister who are related to the new pastor’s wife, and a mysterious British journalist do a lot to shake things up. All of which Faye notices, of course.

This Merry Summertime is an anthology of seven comedy shorts. 4 of them (Sarcophagus; In the End the Story Ended; The Destiny of Princes; and A Matter of Life and Hair) are entertaining scripts that gently satirize the genres of paranormal fantasy, literary classics, silent film, and western romance while providing fresh takes and strong characters to tell these archetypical kinds of stories. The other 3 (Ella Substituted; Movies at the Beach; and Everwood) are short stories that use comedy adventure and mild fantasy elements to explore family life and young women’s place in the world. The theme of the book is reconciliation and renewal as the characters traverse through fiction tropes to find eventual peace and meaning in their lives and the stories celebrate youth, especially for girls, but for everyone who has happy memories of a time in their lives when life was an eternal—and sometimes hilarious—summer.
